We are closed on July 3rd in observance of Independence Day.

29 “There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going:

30 A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any;

31 A greyhound; an he-goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up”.

Proverbs 30:29-31 King James Version (KJV)

O.K., well, I grew up with goats and I have a lot of trouble calling any he-goat ‘comely’, and kings have come and gone, comely or not, but greyhounds are, without a doubt still comely.

This quotation is remarkable really, because the greyhound is the only specific breed of dog mentioned in the bible, indeed the deep history of the greyhound breed is thought to go all the way back to a breed of sighthounds that goes back to the Egyptians and Celts. There’s a fascinating website that traces this history here.

That cumulative and long history of greyhounds brings us directly to Scrappy, a greyhound and VSCP’s Case of the Month.

Greyhounds have actual, official colors; eighteen of them!  Scrappy is a blue fawn colored male, (color descriptions here), and he was born in a litter of seven.  He currently weighs in at about 70lbs. Scrappy was born August 1st, 2016 in Alabama and raced in Arkansas. He bears the official racing name ‘No Breaks’. This is somewhat ironic, because he did, in actuality break, which is where VSCP comes in of course!

Scrappy is a goofball, you know that kind of dog that does the ‘squirrel’ thing when out on walks. He LOVES people, and people love him. He even lives with a cat…and…he’s gorgeous. He has eyes that only show love, which is of course why everyone who meets him wants to hug him as we do here, and we get to do frequently!

Scrappy was brought to Seattle by a woman who cares for retired racers, after Scrappy broke his leg in June of 2019. Greyhound Pet Adoption Northwest, a wonderful organization committed to this magnificent breed (website here) took over care for Scrappy and he is now happily living in a foster home here in Oregon…with a cat.  Unfortunately, the original surgical repair to Scrappy’s fracture did not hold and he was again walking three legged, therefore he was brought to VSCP for evaluation with Dr. Simpson.

VSCP has cared for many dogs, from many different rescue organizations in order to help them transition to their forever homes in excellent health. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to help these dogs and their dedicated organizations prepare these dogs for their forever homes.

Scrappy had surgery (calcaneal fracture revision) on February 19th, 2020. He took to his cast with goofy Scrappy dog grace and to his ensuing wrap bandages with…pajamas.

Scrappy continues to recover, is weight bearing and comes to see us regularly for his bandage changes and check-ups. We are so happy to see his improvements each week.

If you’re interested in adopting a greyhound, find more information here.  Please know that Greyhound Pet Adoption Northwest requires applications, phone interviews and home visits before placing a dog.

Sometime soon, our Scrappy will be placed in his forever home, when he is fully healed and ready to be someone’s favorite friend. Scrappy will be happy to be that friend.
